Manuscript, in a single hand, of a copy of the challenge sent by Northumberland to his erstwhile military commander, Sir Francis Vere, accusing Vere of wrongs done to him during their campaign in the Netherlands and demanding satisfaction, "by word or sword." The challenge is followed by a narrative of subsequent events, including Captain Edmund Whitelocke's role in delivering the letter to Vere; the interactions between Vere's messenger, Captain John Ogle, and Northumberland; Queen Elizabeth's command to Northumberland to cease his action against Vere; and a copy of Vere's reply to Northumberland's letter. Note at end: "Examined with the coppie which Sr Francis Veare sent unto me..."
